The latest software release for our Planmeca Romexis® 7 software introduces AI-powered features for intraoral imaging. Romexis automatically recognises and numbers each tooth in intraoral images, reducing manual work and saving valuable time. The automatic tooth numbering also enables the automatic rotation and placement of the intraoral images into study templates.
Further highlights of the Romexis 6.5.2 release include new tools for 3D imaging, workflow wizard and AI tools for the Romexis® CMF Surgery module, and AI-powered measurement tools for dental analyses in the Romexis® CAD/CAM module.
Romexis release 6.5.2 introduces AI-powered features for intraoral imaging, making dental imaging workflows at dental practices smoother than ever. These AI features are included in the Romexis 7 licence for all users as standard.
Romexis now automatically identifies individual teeth in intraoral images based on their shape and numbers the tooth accordingly. This AI-powered feature works with intraoral images that have been:
- captured with Planmeca ProSensor® HD intraoral sensor
- scanned with Planmeca ProScanner® 2.0 imaging plate scanner
- scanned or captured using the TWAIN interface
- imported to Romexis.
In some countries, it is mandatory to apply tooth numbers for each intraoral image. Since a single bitewing image can show 8–9 teeth, users are required to click each tooth multiple times to mark them in the tooth chart, if done manually. With multiple images, this effort quickly multiplies.
The AI-powered tooth numbering of Romexis 7 eliminates this manual work by automatically identifying each tooth and assigning it with the correct number. This saves significant time, ensures consistent and accurate documentation, and enables more reliable searching and filtering of images by tooth. Users only need to verify the numbering and make corrections, if needed.
The automatic tooth numbering feature is intended as a supportive tool and does not replace professional judgement. The user is solely responsible for reviewing all AI-generated assignments and correcting them, if necessary, before using the information for diagnosis, treatment planning, or documentation. Planmeca accepts no liability for clinical decisions based solely on AI-generated results. The AI model is intended for use only with patients who are 18 years of age or older.
Thanks to automatic tooth recognition and numbering, Romexis can also automatically rotate intraoral images so that each tooth is displayed in the correct orientation – even if the imaging plate was positioned incorrectly during the scanning procedure or if the image was imported in an incorrect position.
Automatic tooth numbering and image rotation enable Romexis to place intraoral images into the correct slots in study templates immediately after they have been imported to Romexis or captured with the Planmeca ProSensor HD intraoral sensor. This means users can capture or scan images in any order that suits their workflow, as AI automatically rotates and places the images into correct slots of the template.
The same also applies to PSP scanning: users no longer need to follow a specific scanning order. Instead, the phosphor plates can be scanned in any order, and Romexis automatically positions each image in the correct template slot in the correct orientation.
New options for viewing CBCT images with reference lines have been added to the 3D imaging module. Users can now select a tool that does not include crosshair lines in the centre of the reference line, making it easier to inspect fine details without the crosshair obstructing the view.
It is also possible to hide reference lines completely.
A new 3D rendering preset option “Soft” has been added to the 3D module. This new preset provides clear visibility of airways and soft tissue structures.
Romexis CMF Surgery module now includes a workflow wizard, which provides simple, step-by-step instructions for performing full orthognathic surgery planning. This makes it easier for users to plan treatments from start to finish, and also helps demonstrate the software module and its features to potential new customers.
The CMF surgery wizard includes GIF tutorial videos and direct links to full online tutorials.
The AI-powered tools of Romexis 7 are now fully integrated into the Romexis CMF Surgery module.
To streamline virtual surgery planning, Smart Anatomy automatically segments the mandible, maxilla, and teeth, and detects 3D landmarks used for CBCT orientation and cephalometric analysis in osteotomy planning. The Smart Fit tool then automatically aligns intraoral scans with CBCT images for seamless integration.
The integrated workflow wizard provides clear guidance on using these AI-powered tools, ensuring smooth and efficient virtual surgery planning workflows.
The Analyse tab of the Romexis® CAD/CAM module has been enhanced with new AI-powered tools, enabling easier and faster automatic measurements and analyses. Romexis uses AI to detect landmarks in intraoral scans, which allows the automatic creation of Bolton, Space and LM analyses, as well as overjet and overbite measurements.
Please note: Ortho Simulator must be installed on the Romexis workstation for these AI measurements to function. However, a Romexis Ortho Simulator licence is not required.
Overjet and overbite measurements can now also be performed manually in the Analyse tab of the CAD/CAM module using the dedicated tool.
